January 30, (THEWILL) — A Federal High Court in Abuja today granted Nollywood actress Angela Okorie bail in the sum of ₦5 million over allegations of cyberbullying and cyberstalking fellow actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie.
The case followed a petition filed by Mercy Johnson-Okojie, who alleged that Okorie used social media platforms to publish malicious and defamatory statements about her and her family.
Okorie was arrested at her Lagos residence on January 27 and transferred to Abuja the following day. She was initially remanded after pleading not guilty to an amended three-count charge.
In his ruling, Justice Emeka Nwite held that there was no strong evidence to suggest that Okorie would jump bail, despite objections raised by the prosecution.
The actress later pleaded not guilty to a seven-count charge bordering on cyberstalking and criminal defamation under the Cybercrime Act.
The prosecution claimed that Okorie previously failed to report after being granted police bail, while her lawyer argued that she travelled for medical reasons and duly informed the authorities.
Pending the verification of her bail conditions, Okorie was remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre.
The case has been adjourned until March 23 for trial.
