June 28, (THEWILL) — Renowned Nigerian filmmaker and actor, Kayode Peters, has passed away in Toronto, Canada, following a prolonged illness. He died on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at the age of 46.
The news of his passing was confirmed by his family in a statement shared via Instagram, describing him as a devoted husband, father, filmmaker, and friend whose work and humanity touched many lives.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved, Kayode Peters Adewumi, who passed on peacefully this morning… KP braved, challenged, and conquered a long-time illness until his last breath,” the family stated.
“KP, a cherished son, husband, father, brother, and friend… was a gifted filmmaker, actor, and producer whose work inspired many. Beyond his talent, it was his kindness, warmth, and generous spirit that truly defined him,” the statement added.
Peters began his entertainment career with the popular sitcom Papa Ajasco & Company before establishing himself as a prominent director and producer.
He gained recognition in the early 2000s as the creator of the widely loved sitcoms Flatmates and My Flatmates, which became staples of Nigerian television.
His directorial credits include several acclaimed films such as Excuse My African, 13 Letters, and Crazy Grannies. His works received international attention and were screened at notable film festivals in Cannes, Toronto, and Texas.
In addition to his achievements in film and television, Peters was deeply committed to mentoring emerging talent in Nollywood.
Many young actors and creatives credit their growth and opportunities in the industry to his guidance.
