October 14, (THEWILL) – Paul Smyth scored one goal and provided an assist on another as Northern Ireland defeated San Marino 3-0 at Windsor Park, on Saturday. The win ended a five-match losing run for Michael O’Neill’s side.
Smyth, earning his sixth international cap, opened the scoring just five minutes in with a scissors kick. He then set up Josh Magennis for Northern Ireland’s second goal moments later. Substitute, Conor McMenamin, added a third in the 81st minute to seal the victory.
The win over 207th-ranked San Marino will not solve Northern Ireland’s bigger issues, but it does provide a morale boost and their first home victory in over a year. O’Neill gave debuts to several new faces, including goalkeeper Conor Hazard and forward Dale Taylor.
The atmosphere felt flat despite Northern Ireland’s early goals. Torrential rain before halftime sent spectators scrambling for cover. Taylor and substitute Callum Marshall had chances to extend the lead but failed to convert.
In the end, Northern Ireland recorded a fairly routine win to snap their losing streak. However, tougher challenges await as they continue a difficult Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. They stay fifth with only six points after seven games.
