July 1, (THEWILL) – The long-awaited free transfer of goalkeeper Andre Onana to Inter Milan, has been officially confirmed.
Onana signed a pre-contract agreement with Inter back in January, far before he actually left the Johan Cruyff Arena, after he and his old employers, Ajax, were unable to come to terms on a contract extension. The deal has come to life now after six months.
The 26-year-old’s transfer to Inter represents a chance to resurrect a career that was severely derailed by his 2021 doping suspension. Onana has always maintained that he unintentionally ingested a substance that was illegal, but he was still given a 12-month suspension that was ultimately shortened to nine months, not long after clubs all over Europe were rumoured to be considering £50 million offers for the goalie.
Upon his return last summer, he participated in nine games across all competitions. He is now seeking a new beginning with Inter, where he will face off against club captain Samir Handanovic, 37, for regular playing time.
While Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Roma and Kristjan Asllani on loan have both been finalised, Romelu Lukaku’s return from Chelsea on a 12-month loan represents Inter’s most significant transaction and that will soon be confirmed as well.
