March 27, (THEWILL) — The Academy Awards will leave its longtime Hollywood home and move to a new downtown Los Angeles venue in 2029, organisers announced on Thursday.
The ceremony will be held at the Peacock Theatre in the L.A. Live complex, about nine miles from its current location at the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard.
The new venue has roughly 7,000 seats, about twice the capacity of the Dolby Theatre.
The Peacock Theatre already hosts major events, including the Primetime Emmy Awards, and will undergo upgrades to its stage, sound, lighting, and backstage areas as part of a partnership between the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and entertainment company AEG.
The Dolby Theatre, which has hosted the Oscars since 2002, will hold its final ceremony for the 100th Academy Awards in 2028 before the show moves downtown.
The 2029 relocation will coincide with a major broadcast change: the Oscars will end decades of U.S. network television broadcasts and stream exclusively worldwide on YouTube.
Academy leaders said the move to L.A. Live will provide a better space for live audiences and global viewers while allowing improvements to the ceremony’s production and overall experience.
The change marks a new era for the Oscars, combining a larger venue with a modern broadcast platform to reach film fans around the world.
