May 08, (THEWILL) — Sir David Attenborough, the celebrated British broadcaster whose voice has inspired billions and earned him the title of the “voice of the natural world,” has turned 100, receiving an outpouring of birthday messages.
The legendary naturalist said he was “completely overwhelmed by birthday greetings” and thanked well-wishers “most sincerely.”
He stated, “I had rather thought that I would celebrate my 100th birthday quietly, but it seems that many of you have had other ideas.”
“I simply can’t reply to each of you all separately, but I would like to thank you all most sincerely for your kind messages.”
BBC One will celebrate the milestone with a live Royal Albert Hall event, while museums and gardens across the UK honor him with exhibitions and special activities.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla also sent birthday greetings, sharing a photo of a young Prince Charles and Princess Anne with Sir David in 1958, when he introduced them to Cocky the cockatoo during his “Zoo Quest” series.
The royal couple wished him a “very happy birthday” and added, “Enjoy your special celebration this evening!”
Friends and colleagues praised Attenborough’s influence. Naturalist Chris Packham called him “the greatest living broadcaster and the greatest ambassador for life on Earth,” while actor Ian McKellen said he represents “the best about the BBC” and has brought joy to millions.
Born on May 8, 1926, in Isleworth, England, Attenborough developed a love for fossils and wildlife as a child.
He joined the BBC in the 1950s and became globally known with “Life on Earth” (1979), followed by series including “The Blue Planet”, “Frozen Planet”, and “Dynasties.”
Through his storytelling, he has inspired generations to care about wildlife and the environment while setting the standard for engaging documentaries.
To coincide with his centenary, a new documentary, “Making Life on Earth”, explores his 70-year journey in natural history filmmaking.
