SAN FRANCISCO, November 13, (THEWILL) –Â English Premier League champions Liverpool have suffered another blow with the news that Egyptian star forward Mohamed Salah has tested positive for COVID-19 while on international duty for Egypt.
The Anfield outfit has had to contend with a host of coronavirus infections since the start of the season. Senegalese winger Sadio Mane, Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara, Swedish winger Xherdan Shaqiri and Greek defender Konstantinos Tsimikas have all contracted the virus.
Yet, despite the spate of infections, they sit one point behind Leicester City who have an early-season berth at the top of the table and who they welcome to Anfield next Saturday, November 21 at the resumption of league games after the international break.
With this positive test result, Salah’s participation for that match is in serious doubt as the Egyptian national team confirmed that the creative forward picked up the coronavirus on international duty and is isolating.
The Egyptian Football Association stated that Salah is not showing any symptoms. They also noted that his positive result was the only infection picked up when the squad assembled.
The FA statement on their Facebook page read:
“The medical swab conducted on the mission of our first national football team showed that our international player, Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool star, was infected with the Coronavirus after his test came back positive.
“The player does not suffer from any symptoms. The other members of the team tested negative. Salah underwent the medical protocol after the team’s doctor coordinated with his English club. In addition to his isolation inside his room and also isolating all his contacts.”
