May 12, (THEWILL) — Nollywood actress, Shine Rosman, has spoken about the growing rate of sexual harassment against women in Nigeria, especially in crowded public places.
Speaking in a snippet of an unreleased interview with Tolu Afilaka, Rosman said many cases of harassment happen openly, with offenders rarely facing consequences. She added that the problem has gradually become normalised in society.
“Do you know how bad sexual harassment is in Lagos? Like go to Yaba, as a girl, and see how you will be touched inappropriately”, she said.
“Everybody hearing this knows that it is true. But till today, nothing is being done about it.”
The actress referred to experiences in Yaba, where she claimed women are often touched inappropriately in public without intervention from authorities or bystanders.
Rosman also recalled a recent TikTok video showing a young woman confronting a man who allegedly tried to harass her in Yaba.
“I saw a girl on TikTok one of these days. She was at Yaba the other day, and she had a cord with her. When a guy approached her and tried to touch her inappropriately, she flogged him. That is how it should be”, she stated.
Rosman said sexual harassment is still not taken seriously enough despite the risks it poses to women’s safety.
“In 2026, in a country like Nigeria, sexual harassment is still one of the most passive things.
“If a man can sexually harass you casually during the day, what do you think he can do behind closed doors when no one is looking?” she added.
She also questioned whether women are being forced to rely on self-defence because of the lack of action from authorities.
“If the government is not going to do anything, is it not okay for us to defend ourselves?” she asked.
Rosman’s comments have since sparked conversations online about women’s safety and the need for stronger action against harassment in public spaces.
