February 23, (THEWILL) — Nigerian singer, Simi, has responded after old tweets from 2012 resurfaced online, following her comments on a recent false rape allegation involving TikTok user, Mirabel.
The controversy began when Simi weighed in on conversations about rape culture linked to the case. She said men should stop raping women, stressed that almost every woman she knows has experienced sexual assault, and added that rapists should be castrated. Her remarks sparked heated exchanges across social media.
In the days that followed, critics dug up old tweets from her early twenties and shared screenshots online, leading to further backlash.
After several days of criticism, Simi released a statement on Sunday, saying she had been alerted to the resurfaced posts and felt compelled to provide context.
She explained that the tweets were written 14 years ago when she was 23 and helping at her mother’s daycare while building her music career. According to her, the posts were simple reflections of her daily life at the time.
Simi wrote:
“I haven’t been on Twitter today – but someone brought a few of my old tweets to my attention, and I want to address it.
“14 years ago, I was 23, so I was definitely not a child. I’m not here to make excuses because I don’t have anything to make excuses for. What I can’t let anyone do is twist my story to fit false narratives.
“In 2012, I lived and helped out at my mom’s daycare while I was hustling my music. I tweeted everything that happened in my life. Kids can be mischievous. If a child did something I found funny, I tweeted about it… Nothing I tweeted was from perversion.
“I’ve never been depraved in my life… I have always spoken against rape and sexual assault. It’s not a costume I’m wearing, it’s who I am… I said stop raping women. I stand by it.”
She added that her team has deleted some of the older tweets because of how sensitive the situation is for her family, although she initially did not want them removed.
Simi’s statement seeks to clarify the context of the resurfaced posts and reaffirm her long-standing stance against rape and sexual assault as the online debate continues.
