BEVERLY HILLS, November 01, (THEWILL) – Aston Villa, who were looking to bounce back after their unbeaten start to the season was ended by Leeds last week hosted Southampton at Villa Park on Matchday 7 of the English Premier League. Rather, it was Southampton who continued their fine form to stretch their run of victories with a 4-3 win.
A late fight-back was not enough for the home side to take anything from this game as a spirited performance led by captain James Ward-Prowse was enough for Saints to get the three points and make it five games unbeaten.
Villa’s dreary first-half display left them chasing the game and despite a late flurry of goals from central defender Tyrone Mings, forward Ollie Watkins and winger Jack Grealish, it remained insufficient to take a point for Dean Smith’s side.
Ward-Prowse’s brace, a first half goal from Denmark’s centre back Jannick Vestergaard and second half goal from winger Danny Ings allowed the visitors to take all three points.
With the win, Southampton move up to third in the Premier League, level on points with Everton in second who play Newcastle later on Saturday. Meanwhile, Aston Villa’s back to back losses mean they drop to seventh in the table after six games.
Southampton next face Newcastle at home next weekend, whilst Villa travel to North London to take on Arsenal.
