July 17, (THEWILL) – Spain defeated Denmark 1-0, thanks to a late goal from Marta Cardona, securing their spot in the quarterfinals of the 2022 European Women’s Championship.
In Group B’s standings on Saturday, no matter how the other fixture between Finland and Germany turned out, Spain and Denmark were deadlocked on three points and victory for any of them will see them advance as Group B’s runners-up.
Both teams had opportunities in the first half, but there were no goals as Olga Carmona side-netted a chance shortly after the restart with Spain making most of the inroads early in the second half.
Nadia Nadim, however, came near to breaking the stalemate in the dying moments by forcing Spanish goalkeeper Sandra Panos to make a great one-handed save as Denmark got more desperate.
However, Cardona made better use of her late chance and scored in stoppage time to give the Spanish three points and qualified them for the quarterfinals. They next take on hosts England, who advanced to the quarterfinals after winning their own group.
