SAN FRANCISCO, November 17, (THEWILL) –Â On Tuesday evening, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will clash with the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone in the reverse fixture of their double-header 2022 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in Freetown.
THEWILL believes that the senior men’s football team will be aware that for Nigerians, nothing less than a solid performance with a result that will bring about some restoration of their badly bruised reputation will be acceptable.
The Super Eagles put a nasty dent on their high ratings on the continent and globally with a dismal outing when they surrendered a four-goal lead to draw 4-4 against the Leone Stars at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin City on Friday, November 13.
It was no surprise that the abysmal result and embarrassing performance of the three-time African champions evoked wide condemnation from Nigerian football fans. Not a few immediately called for the heads of Gernot Rohr, his technical bench and some of the team players.
As THEWILL reported, immediately after the match in Benin, the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Melvin Pinnick summoned the team’s technical crew to address the poor outing and immediately seek remedies. Afterwards, Pinnick said he was not expecting anything less than a 4-nil win in Freetown.

Many Nigerians feel likewise. Football fans across the country and Super Eagles’ supporters around the world expect a massive victory over the Leone Stars as a response to that draw, if they are to be pacified.
The Super Eagles are still top of Group L with seven points and victory in Freetown could be enough to take them to Cameroon 2022. The fixture kicks off at 5PM Nigerian time at the National Stadium in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
