June 10 (THEWILL) — South African singer Tyla has joined the voice cast of “Toy Story 5”, making her Disney and Pixar voice acting debut.
The Grammy-winning star will voice a new character called Inflatable Flamingo in a special version of the film for audiences across Sub-Saharan Africa.
The casting is part of Disney’s ongoing practice of using local celebrities for different regions.
Inflatable Flamingo is a playful pool toy who befriends Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the Toy Story gang during their latest adventure.
Tyla said she was thrilled to join a franchise she grew up watching.
“When I was asked to join the cast of Toy Story 5, I was so excited. I just couldn’t believe that the offer was even presented to me,” she said.
She added that Toy Story has always been a favourite in her family and described the opportunity as a full-circle moment.
Her casting makes her the first African artist to voice a character in the “Toy Story” franchise.
“Toy Story 5” features returning stars like Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, alongside new cast members including Bad Bunny and Greta Lee.
The film follows the toys as they face new challenges as technology changes the way children play.
The film is scheduled for release on June 19, 2026.
