February 10, (THEWILL) – UEFA has stepped forward to provide aid to the victims of the recent devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.
The body confirmed a donation of €200,000, with €150,000 going to the Turkish Football Federation and €50,000 split between two disaster relief organizations, Bonyan and Tiafi. In a statement, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin expressed the federation’s support for those affected by the tragedy.
In addition to the donation, UEFA will hold a moment of silence before all of its club competition matches next week. The UEFA Champions League Final, set to take place in Istanbul’s Ataturk Olympic Stadium in June, will also have fund-raising activities in the works.
The English Premier League has also pledged its support to the earthquake victims. A statement from the league confirmed their support for the Disasters Emergency Committee’s Turkey-Syria Appeal, and that black armbands would be worn in tribute during the weekend’s matches.
Sadly, Christian Atsu, who played in the EPL for Newcastle United, is still missing following the tremors. His club Hatayspor has been unable to locate him, sparking concern among officials about finding him alive.
