December 22, (THEWILL) — American actor James Ransone, best known for his role as Ziggy Sobotka on HBO’s The Wire, has died at age 46.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner ruled his death on December 19, 2025, as a suicide.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1979, Ransone built a respected career across television and film.

His credits included portraying adult Eddie Kaspbrak in It: Chapter Two, roles in The Black Phone and its 2025 sequel, the war miniseries Generation Kill, and television series such as Bosch and Poker Face.

He also appeared in films including Sinister, Sinister 2, and Tangerine.

Ransone earned lasting recognition for his performance as the troubled dock worker Ziggy Sobotka in the second season of The Wire.

Following news of his passing, fans and fellow actors shared tributes praising his versatility and dedication as a character actor.
