June 11, (THEWILL) — French singer and actor Patrick Bruel has been placed under formal investigation in France over multiple allegations of rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and harassment.

The 67-year-old was placed under investigation on June 10 after spending two days in police custody. Prosecutors confirmed the indictment the following day. The investigation covers alleged incidents between 2008 and 2019.

Bruel has been released under strict supervision. He cannot leave France, contact alleged victims, or visit massage parlours linked to the case.

Of nine initial allegations, four counts, including rape, attempted rape, and sexual assault, are being formally investigated.

The remaining cases are still under review.

Bruel denies all accusations.

The case comes amid continued attention in France on sexual abuse cases linked to the #MeToo movement, a global campaign that began in 2017 to speak out against sexual harassment and abuse, especially in entertainment and workplaces.

Actor Gérard Depardieu has also faced sexual assault charges in a separate case, as France deals with several high-profile allegations involving public figures.

Under French law, a formal investigation means judges believe there is enough evidence to continue examining the case, which could eventually lead to a trial.

Bruel is one of France’s most popular entertainers. He rose to fame in the 1980s with hits such as “Marre de cette nana-là,” “Casser la voix,” and “Place des grands hommes,” and has also appeared in more than 30 films.

He remains under court supervision as investigations continue.
