February 27, (THEWILL) — Canadian-American actor Jim Carrey received the Honorary César Award at the 51st César Awards in Paris on Thursday. The Césars are France’s top film awards.
Carrey delivered his acceptance speech entirely in French, earning a warm standing ovation from the audience.
He thanked the global public for “opening their hearts” to his art and characters throughout his 40-year career.
He also expressed gratitude to his loved ones, including his daughter Jane, his grandson Jackson, and his partner, Mina. Carrey paid tribute to his late father, Percy Joseph Carrey, describing him as “the funniest man I have ever known.”
At the end of his speech, he joked with the audience: “So, how was my French? Almost mediocre, right? Forgive me, I didn’t speak French, but I’m just learning it. My tongue is tired.”
Carrey rose to fame in the 1990s with hit comedies such as ‘The Mask’, ‘Dumb and Dumber’, ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’, and ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective’.
He later took on dramatic roles, including ‘The Truman Show’, ‘Man on the Moon’, and ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’. His performances in ‘The Truman Show’ and ‘Man on the Moon’ earned him two Golden Globe Awards.
In recent years, the actor has stepped back from Hollywood to focus on painting. The honorary César recognizes his long and successful career in international cinema.
