March 11, (THEWILL) — American R&B star, Ronnie DeVoe, known for hits like “Cool It Now” and “Mr Telephone Man”, has officially become a citizen of Ghana, marking a historic milestone in both his career and personal life.
He and his wife, Shamari DeVoe, received citizenship on March 9, 2026, during a ceremony in Accra.
DeVoe, best known as a member of the influential R&B groups New Edition and Bell Biv DeVoe, was among 150 members of the African diaspora who took the Oath of Allegiance at the event organised by Ghana’s Diaspora Affairs Office.
The ceremony, held at the Accra International Conference Centre, was overseen by Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who described it as a “moral reconnection” for the global African community.
The event is part of Ghana’s ongoing efforts to reconnect people of African descent with their ancestral homeland, strengthen cultural and economic ties, and welcome applicants from across the globe.
For DeVoe, the moment was both historic and emotional, with many new citizens describing it as a meaningful homecoming and a chance to reconnect with their roots.
Officials said the initiative highlights Ghana’s leadership in engaging the diaspora and building lasting cultural and economic bridges with Africans abroad.
The couple also celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows in a traditional Ghanaian ceremony in Accra.
The latest citizenship confirmation for these 150 diasporans comes exactly two years after American singer and songwriter Stevie Wonder also became a Ghanaian citizen, reflecting the country’s continued commitment to welcoming people of African descent.
The DeVoes join a growing number of global figures embracing Ghana as a second home, highlighting the nation’s dedication to honouring history and fostering cultural exchange.
