March 23, (THEWILL) — American actress Valerie Perrine, known for her Oscar-nominated role in “Lenny” and her portrayal of Miss Teschmacher in the “Superman” films, has died at the age of 82.
She passed away peacefully on Monday at her home in Beverly Hills after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Her friend Stacey Souther, who had been her primary caregiver for many years, shared the news on Facebook, saying,
“It is with deep sadness that I share the heartbreaking news that Valerie has passed away. She faced Parkinson’s disease with incredible courage and compassion, never once complaining.
“She was a true inspiration who lived life to the fullest—and what a magnificent life it was. The world feels less beautiful without her in it.”
Perrine, born in Galveston, Texas, in 1943, rose to fame for her role in the 1974 biopic “Lenny,” which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
She went on to star as Eve Teschmacher, the loyal companion of Lex Luthor, in “Superman” (1978) and “Superman II” (1980), becoming a beloved figure in pop culture.
Her other notable works included “Slaughterhouse-Five” (1972), “W.C. Fields and Me” (1976), “The Electric Horseman” (1979), and the romantic comedy “What Women Want” (2000).
She also made television appearances in series such as “Northern Exposure,” “ER,” and “As the World Turns.”
Perrine was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2015 and lived with the condition for more than a decade before her passing.
In recent years, a GoFundMe campaign was set up to help fulfil her final wish of being laid to rest at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
She is remembered for her distinctive performances and lasting impact on Hollywood film history.
