February 16, (THEWILL) — Oscar-winning actor, Robert Duvall, known for his iconic roles in ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’, has died at the age of 95.
His wife, Luciana Duvall, confirmed the news on Monday, saying he died “peacefully” at his home in Middleburg, Virginia, on Sunday, surrounded by loved ones.
“To the world, he was an Academy Award‑winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything”, she said in a statement shared on his official social media pages.
“His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court.
“For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind.”
Duvall was born in San Diego, California, in 1931. After serving in the Korean War, he studied acting at New York’s prestigious Principia College and under famed drama coach, Sanford Meisner.
He later shared an apartment with Dustin Hoffman and became close with Gene Hackman, who would also go on to become a Hollywood legend.
With a career spanning over seven decades, Duvall built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most respected actors.
He earned seven Academy Award nominations and won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role as a washed‑up country singer in ‘Tender Mercies’ (1983).
Some of his most memorable roles included the loyal consigliere Tom Hagen in ‘The Godfather’ and ‘The Godfather Part II’, and Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore in ‘Apocalypse Now’, where he delivered the now‑legendary line, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning”.
Duvall also appeared in films such as ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, ‘Network’, ‘The Great Santini’, and ‘The Judge’.
Even in his later years, he remained active in film and television, known for his dedication and versatility.
His last film appearance was in the 2022 movie ‘The Pale Blue Eye’, and his final onscreen appearance was in early 2026 in the series ‘The Culture Mafia’.
He leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of Hollywood’s most respected actors.
