Carlos Sainz

July 03, (THEWILL) – Carlos Sainz put on a strong performance in the British Grand Prix, to take home his first Formula One victory of his career.

The Spanish driver finished first on Sunday, at the Silverstone Circuit in England, after winning the pole in qualifying, which was also a career-first for him. That came after a suspenseful first lap, in which Zhou Guanyu’s car overturned, following a collision with Mercedes’ George Russell and involved many vehicles. Guanyu was stretchered off the track.

Verstappen’s prospects were ended by a flat tyre, although many other drivers had the lead at various points. A safety car tilted the scales back in Ferrari’s favour, Sainz leaped past teammate, Charles Leclerc and sped out to win his maiden Formula One race.

Lewis Hamilton excited the home audience with a podium finish in his Mercedes, Sergio Perez came in second as Sainz sped away to victory.

With six victories in 10 races, Verstappen continues to sit atop the driver standings, although his seventh-place finish prevented him from maintaining his superiority.
