US Rapper Afroman Wins Court Case Over Songs Mocking Police Raid

March 19, (THEWILL) — US rapper, Joseph Edgar Foreman, known as Afroman, and best known for his 2000 hit “Because I Got High”, has won a court case brought against him by seven sheriff’s deputies over songs and videos he made following a police raid on his home.

The lawsuit was filed by deputies from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, who claimed the rapper invaded their privacy and defamed them.

They took legal action after Afroman used home security footage of a 2022 raid on his house to create music videos for songs such as “Lemon Pound Cake” and “Will You Help Me Repair My Door”.

He maintained that the videos were a form of free speech and a way to hold law enforcement accountable for the raid, which did not result in any charges against him.
The raid, carried out as part of a drug and kidnapping investigation, did not lead to any charges.

After a three-day trial, a jury ruled in favour of the rapper.

“We did it America! Yeah! We did it! Freedom of speech!” Afroman said outside the Ohio court after the verdict.

During the trial, the rapper defended his actions, saying the situation was caused by the raid.

“The whole raid was a mistake”, he told the court. “All of this is their fault.

“If they hadn’t wrongly raided my house, there would be no lawsuit. I would not know their names. They wouldn’t be on my home surveillance system, and there would be no songs, nothing.”

The deputies had sought $3.9 million in damages, citing humiliation and reputational harm. Their lawyer argued that the rapper spread false and harmful claims.

“Even if somebody does something to you that hurts you… that doesn’t justify telling intentional lies designed to hurt people”, the lawyer said.

Afroman’s legal team argued that his work was protected under free speech and that public officials must tolerate criticism.
