SAN FRANCISCO, October 24, (THEWILL) – A Chief Magistrate Court, sitting in Ebute-Meta, Lagos, has ordered that former Nigerian wrestler, John Uti, popularly known as ‘Power Uti’, be remanded in prison custody over alleged complicity in the death of his wife.
The wrestler is alleged to have beaten his wife Toyin Uti, to death, and abandoned her body at their residence, 17, Oremeji Street, Ilupeju, Lagos, on October 10, 2017.
Uti, who reigned in wrestling world in the 80s to 90s, is facing a two-count charge of murder and negligence.
The magistrate granted a N500,000 bail and sent Uti’s case file to the Director of public prosecution for legal advice after determining that none of the witnesses listed said Uti killed his wife.
She added that even the Police Investigation Officer (IPO) could not establish that the defendant killed the deceased.
The magistrate however ordered that Uti be remanded in prison custody pending when he meets the bail conditions and adjourned till November 15 for report on DPP’s advice.
