Her casket, draped in the Indian flag, had earlier been placed at her residence for public viewing.

She was also honoured with a gun salute during the ceremony. Before the cremation, mourners sang her song “Abhi na jaao chhor kar,” meaning “don’t leave just yet.”

Tributes came from across India and beyond. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said she was “one of the most iconic and versatile voices India has ever known,” while President Droupadi Murmu described her death as “an irreparable loss to music lovers.”

Actor Shah Rukh Khan said she was “a talent that will outlive many,” adding that her voice will “continue to resonate world over for centuries to come.” Composer A. R. Rahman said she “lives forever through her voice and aura – what an artist.”

Bhosle died on Sunday in Mumbai after being admitted to Breach Candy Hospital following a cardiac arrest and respiratory complications.

Over a career spanning more than eight decades, she recorded more than 12,000 songs and became one of the most influential voices in Indian cinema.

Known for her versatility, she sang a wide range of songs and built a distinct identity alongside her sister, Lata Mangeshkar.
